Thank you Phillip, and yes, it has been a view I have held for some time but I was getting to bursting point so found some solace in writing it down!

I know exactly what you mean. I am so interested in human behaviour and wrote a piece about this in relation to climate change a few years ago, very much using myself as the example.

Is it belief in a higher power? Is it being prisoners to hope. Is the very thing that makes us human going to be the thing that kills us? A sensible friend said to me just the other day "I know it sounds crazy, but I still think they will sort it out in the end." !!

That raises so many questions, and I have a feeling that I know what your first one will be...
